This Week's Concert
Sunday, June 2, 2024
Note from the webmaster:  We update this web site at least once a week during our summer concert season.  Since the program for each Sunday concert is finalized at our rehearsal on Monday evening, we generally post the week's update sometime on Tuesday.  Unfortunately, if you are viewing this page on a summer Monday, what follows will undoubtedly be the information for YESTERDAY'S concert.
For those specifically SEEKING web pages from past concerts, our recent concert archives are now available online.
Enhancing the quality of life
in Burlington and Southeast Iowa
since 1927
Wow!  It seemed to take forever for the summer concert season to arrive but it's here at last and we are excited!  As has become a tradition, we are beginning the season with our Teddy Bear's Picnic teddy bear parade and this year there'll be a new feature.  We have a new teddy bear mascot who'll lead the parade!  If you've visited our Facebook page you may already have caught a glimpse of him - he's very handsome but he needs a name and, if you come to this week's concert you'll have a chance to help name him.  And there's more: the band has joined with several non profit groups to provide lots of kid-friendly, music-themed activities from 6:00 to 7:00 PM before the 7:30 concert start time.  On the lawn near the bandshell, there'll be crafts, a music activity wall, bean shakers, a story walk and a teddy bear repair hospital.  The participating organizations include ADDS, the Burlington Public Library, Community Action of Southeast Iowa, BHS Music Boosters, STEM Foundation, and the Art Center of Burlington.

Next week's conductor
will be Ben Grochowsky
This will also be our Educational Outreach concert.  Each year we invite area school band directors to nominate their most outstanding students to play with our band.  We want them to have the experience of playing at a higher level than their school band's can provide and we hope that they will notice that adults of all ages enjoy making music together.  We are very grateful to the Community Foundation of Des Moines County for funding this concert.
Janel Horn
The concert, at the Crapo Park bandshell on Sunday June 2, will be conducted by Janel Horn, the band director at Edward Stone Middle School.  When not conducting, Janel plays saxophone in the band.  Besides our band, Janel performs with the Southeast Iowa Band and is a member of BASQ - the Burlington Area Saxophone Quartet!
Janel has chosen a varied and entertaining program.  Her selections include Fanfare and Flourishes by James Curnow; The Syncopated Clock by Leroy Anderson; As Summer Was Just Beginning by Larry Daehn; The Teddy Bear Picnic by John Bratton; Cyrus the Great by Karl King; Shakespeare Meets Godzilla by Robert Buckley; High Water Mark: The Third Day by Michael Sweeney and The Lion King (medley) arranged by John Higgins including Circle of Life, I Just Can't Wait to Be King, Be Prepared, Hakuna Matata, Can You Feel The Love Tonight, and King of Pride Rock; and our traditional closing march, The Stars and Stripes Forever by John Philip Sousa.
