Of particular interest is the “transitional” nature of this photo. The “new” band shell is in place but it is installed on the old wooden platform as evidenced by the white-painted railing. That platform can be seen in an earlier historic photo titled “The Burlington Municipal Band on the Bandstand at Crapo Park in 1950".
In this picture the setup of the band was different than it is at present: the clarinet section was seated to the conductor’s right rather than to his left as it presently is. Maury frequently experimented with different setups, always in a quest for what worked best.
The only individual positively identified in this photo is clarinetist Don Davis. The identity of the oboist to Maury’s left is unknown. Perhaps a visitor to this page can identify her.
Another transitional element in this photo is Maury Wright’s striped uniform trousers with a white shirt. In earlier times the band members wore their uniforms for concerts but by this time the uniform coats were gone while the trousers remained.

Our thanks to former band member Jim Mohatt of York, Pennsylvania for sending us this photo. Jim played trombone in the band and was the band director at Horace Mann Jr. High School.
